Medicine Hat, Alberta

École St. John Paul II Elementary School was designed so that all spaces are brought together under one high-level roof with smaller buildings, creating an interior village-like setting. The core classrooms and ancillary rooms open directly to a large interconnected gathering space and library/learning commons. The roof extends high above the spaces below extending towards a set of giant south facing windows and enabling many clerestory windows to provide an abundance of natural light to the entire school. The south facing windows were designed to enable the building to have passive solar heating in the winter and the school has achieved LEED Gold status.
