Cardston Elementary School Modernization

schools

Cardston, Alberta

The original Cardston Elementary School consisted of three circular teaching pods over seven different floor levels. Developed around an open concept learning plan, the original school was constructed with no classroom partitions. Temporary classroom partitions had been in place since shortly after the opening however. Together with Alberta Infrastructure, Alberta Education, and the Westwind School Division, FWBA Architects lead a review of the modernization of the school. Due to significant barrier-free access and lockdown challenges a complete new school core was accepted as the most cost effective and practical modernization solution. The design joins two of the existing pods and results in only one level change. The completed modernization enhances the original unique school features and includes an exciting efficient new core with gymnasium, gathering space, administration and library.
